چکیده

Gastrointestinal parasitism is a widely recognised problem in sheep production, particularly for lambs. While anthelmintics have a pivotal role in controlling the effects of parasites, there is a paucity of data on how farmers use anthelmintics. A representative sample of Irish lowland farmers were surveyed regarding their parasite control practices and risk factors that may contribute to the development of anthelmintic resistance. Questionnaires were distributed to 166 lowland Irish sheep producers. The vast majority of respondents treated their sheep with anthelmintics. Lambs were the cohort treated most frequently, the majority of farmers followed a set programme as opposed to treating at sign of disease. A substantial proportion (61%) administered four or more treatments to lambs in a 'normal' year. Departures from best practice in anthelmintic administration that would encourage the development of anthelmintic resistance were observed. In conclusion, in the light of anthelmintic resistance, there is a need for a greater awareness of the principles that underpin the sustainable use of anthelmintics and practices that preserve anthelmintic efficacy should be given a very high priority in the design of helminth control programmes on each farm. To this end, given that veterinary practitioners and agricultural advisors were considered to be the farmer's most popular information resource, the capacity of these professions to communicate information relating to best practice in parasite control should be targeted.

First Report of Anthelmintic Resistance in Gastrointestinal Nematodes of Sheep from Costa Rica

As the prevalence and severity of anthelmintic resistance continue to rise, nematode infections in sheep correspondingly reduce the profitability of the sheep industry. In Costa Rica, sheep production systems are increasing in both number and importance. A field trial study was carried out to detect the level of anthelmintic resistance to albendazole and ivermectin in gastrointestinal nematodes...

Prevalence of anthelmintic resistance on Lithuanian sheep farms assessed by in vitro methods.

BACKGROUND This study examines the prevalence of drug resistance in gastrointestinal nematodes to macrocyclic lactones (ML) and benzimidazoles (BZ) in Lithuanian sheep using sensitive and precise in vitro methods. The survey was conducted from August 2013 to November 2014. Thirty-three farms with sheep previously treated with BZ and ivermectin (IVM) were included in the study. On 12 farms where...

Integrated Parasite Management for Small Ruminants: Anthelmintic Efficacy and Resistance and Its Implications for Control Programs

Anthelmintic resistance in gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) populations infecting sheep and goats is a well characterized problem in humid, hot regions in southern USA. Field reports indicate that this is a major problem in northern regions as well but this has not been documented. Documentation for individual farms is essential to enable development of an effective GIN control program and docum...

Anthelmintic-resistant nematodes in Irish commercial sheep flocks- the state of play

Anthelmintic resistance has been reported in most sheep producing countries. Prior to the mid 1990s, reports of anthelmintic resistance in Ireland were sparse and focused on benzimidazole, one of the three classes of anthelmintic available during this period. This evidence for efficacy issues on Irish farms combined with awareness that anthelmintic resistance was increasingly being reported in ...

Anthelmintic resistance in ovine gastrointestinal nematodes in inland southern Queensland.

OBJECTIVE To establish the prevalence of anthelmintic resistance in ovine gastrointestinal nematodes in southern Queensland. DESIGN An observational parasitological study using the faecal egg count reduction test. METHODS Sheep farms (n = 20) enrolled in this study met the twin criteria of using worm testing for drench decisions and having concerns about anthelmintic efficacy. On each farm,...
